The best time to travel to Portugal

Find out which is the best time to visit Portugal and which are the highlights of each season

Portugal is a charming and diverse country, full of fascinating stories, breathtaking landscapes and delicious gastronomy. If you’re planning your trip to this country, it’s important to consider the best time to visit it, taking into account the weather, popular festivals and the specific attractions of each season.

The country is full of beaches, wineries, mountain ranges and so much more, with temperatures that can differ a lot throughout the year. In this article, we will show you the charm of Portugal at each season of year, from the vibrant summer to the calm of winter.

What’s the weather like in Portugal?

The climate in Portugal varies from one region to another, but is generally warm and pleasant due to the Atlantic Ocean. Generally speaking, Portugal is known for its many sunny days throughout the year, making it a popular destination for those who appreciate the mild weather.

During the summer, temperatures are high and rainy days can be rare. In the winter, although it gets cold and rainy, it rarely reaches below 0°C temperatures. In spring and autumn, the temperature is very pleasant and the landscapes are even more beautiful.

So, depending on your preferences, you can choose from the the heat and hot days to a colder temperature. You can even enjoy a typically autumn European climate to try the delicious wine.

The high season in Portugal: Summer

Summer in Europe runs from June to August and is always the most popular time of the year. Not only do you get to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities, it’s also the time of year when the main festive events take place.

During the summer, Portugal springs to life with its warm, sunny weather, inviting tourists to enjoy stunning beaches and lively parties. The long sandy beaches of the Algarve Coast or Costa Vicentina are unmissable destinations for sun and sea lovers.

Besides the beaches, summertime in Portugal is famous for its popular festivals. Throughout the month of June, various open-air celebrations take place all over the country. The streets are filled with music, dance, grilled sardines and hot air balloons. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the culture and fun of the Portuguese people while enjoying the delicious local cuisine.

For those who appreciate history and architecture, summer is also the perfect time to explore the cities of Portugal. Lisbon dazzles with its picturesque neighbourhoods and yellow cable cars; Porto impresses with its authenticity and Douro Valley vineyards; and Coimbra has its university charm. Take the opportunity to admire some historical monuments, such as the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the Pena National Palace, and get to know the rich cultural heritage that Portugal has to offer.

The low season in Portugal: Winter

The low season in Portugal runs from November to March and these winter months are the coldest in the country, which can also be snowy and rainy.

If you would rather travel when there are fewer crowds and more affordable prices, the low season in Portugal is an excellent choice. During this time, cities and tourist attractions are less busy, allowing you to enjoy the sights more peacefully.

This is an excellent time to visit Lisbon and its surroundings, for example, as there aren’t so many tourists crowding the various towns. You can make the most of the spaces and the prices.

Another advantage of travelling in the low season is the opportunity to enjoy Portuguese food and wine. You will be able to savour traditional dishes and typical regional sweets without the bustle of the crowds. Don’t forget to accompany your meal with a good Portuguese wine, exploring the wine regions of the Douro, Alentejo or Madeira Island.

Serra da Estrela is also an excellent location to visit during the winter. The mountains are covered in snow, creating an enchanting landscape. It is also when the local ski resort is in full swing.

Visiting Portugal in autumn and spring

The months of April to May (spring) and September to October (autumn) are ideal for outdoor walks. The temperatures are very pleasant and the landscapes are even more beautiful.

Spring in Portugal is an enchanting time, when the country is filled with colour and flowers are blooming everywhere. Natural parks, such as Peneda-Gerês National Park, offer lush trails and panoramic views of mountains and waterfalls. The plains of the Alentejo are covered in a sea of wild flowers, creating a magical atmosphere for nature lovers.

During autumn, the Douro Valley is a must-see. September is the month when the grapes are harvested for the production of wine, so there are plenty of boat trips and wine tastings to try. Don’t forget, of course, to visit the city of Porto and enjoy the Luís I Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
